Hey Guys. I wanted to share an MV I recently made of both the series and the special. I took a more serious tone with it but I hope you like it.
Just random thoughts I have about the series:
I always recommend Nodame to everyone because it's just one of those rare dramas which actually deeply touches you. I've always used the line "I've never heard anyone say a negative word about it" when making the recommendation but I can no longer do that. Recently I saw someone say they couldn't get into it because Nodame was an irritating character.
I think whenever we have someone with that over the top personality, there is a very thin line between annoying/ridiculous and endearing/believable. For me, Nodame was the latter. So damn weird that you find yourself inescapably intrigued. She has the soul of a child in the sense that she's carefree (At first), naive, imaginative, and finds enjoyment in the simplest of things.
It's always risky to write a heroine who is "obsessed" with the male lead. It can go downhill very easily and earn the scorn of the viewers (A perfect example of this is XQ from "It started with a kiss"). But what saves Nodame Cantabile from this is that the romance is not the main focus of the story. And when it is, you can see both characters actually positively affecting one another. Changing for the better. Especially Chiaki. He plays every note with his head while Nodame doesn't want to play unless it's with her heart. They're designed to help one another.
The only thing I wasn't entirely happy with at the end of NC was the fact that Noda went to Paris basically chasing after Chiaki. Did she really want to be a pianist? Or did she only want to do it to get close to him? Was she going to become just another Marie Sue?
What a marvelous surprise to see Nodame tackle this exact question in the Special. She must find her own path and find out what she wants. And if she can actually do it.
In the end she opens up a whole new door and gains independence and self worth. This is what stood out for me because heroines rarely get any character development in dramas. They tend to be one toned.
Chiaki also goes searching down his own path. And in the end finds...Nodame. As well as the ability to actually open up to someone else. To put himself out there and bare his heart.
I think this series and the special were absolute perfection. Every character is struggling. They're in a race and are finding reaching the finish line to be difficult. Fear, uncertainty, and lack of confidence are all a factor. It was a great experience to see them all tackle that big rock that blocked their path. No one has done it better and they'll have to try really hard to be able to. It really does feel like you're watching the manga come to life. It keeps the exaggerations, the quirkiness and somehow makes it work. Bravo!
